the clinometer is used in bore holes to measure the degree of angle of deflection.

It is a simple device employing the etching of a glass vial by a submerged 4% solution of hydrofluoric acid to indicate the angle of the hole.

The vial inserted into the bottom of the clinometer is filled with a solution to a height of about 5 cm and plugged tightly with a rubber stopper. Then the whole device is lowerd to the bottom of the hole and allowed an etching time equal to the time taken to lower it.
